It's the time of year where spending increases. With the rising costs of everything, the last thing on many people's minds is going to be buying something like Warhammer. It is an expensive hobby. That's okay though, as almost everyone has likes that are expensive like make-up, and crafting supplies, streaming services, and video games. This really is no different.
Getting Introduced Into Warhammer - The Long Road
To start with the models themselves are expensive but the set up to even beginning much less complete the sculpting, piecing together and painting those minis adds up $$$. This might make you turn your nose, but you must embrace their love of this extremely detailed game and maybe find something that you like about it too.
It took me over a year to find something I liked about it. That was Cherubael, the daemonhost of Eisenhorn which led me down this path of secretly loving and looking forward to finding new characters I love. (We even named our travelling van in New Zealand, Cherubael because as you may or may not know Cherubael will help you but only because it is forced to).
As far as gameplay goes, initially I hated it, I don't enjoy strategy games and found it to be stressful and overwhelming. It does take time to learn the game especially if you are not motivated to do so. But it does get better, I even picked a team, the Orks (I am a xenos loving heretic at heart) and my husband even gave the flamer a specific touch of whimsy just for me.
Now, they have even created a game play mode where it can be you and the player working together to defeat an enemy. We tried this recently with the new rules that came out and it was fun!
Don't Let The Price Tag Dissuade You
If your friend, partner, brother, or whoever is looking to get into Warhammer, it can initially be overwhelming. There are so many options, countless things to get, and a boatload of lore.
Just because the large box sets can range over $200 does not mean that you have to spend that much. Instead of going all out right away because Warhammer can be a hobby with a price tag, start small. A little box of minis, a pack of beat them up type brushes, and a few paints can really get the ball rolling. Below is my gift guide for those just beginning and those who are well established.
How To Buy Warhammer Gifts
For starters you can seek a variety of outlets to get a slew of unending gifts. There is the Games Workshop website, Amazon, Audible for audio books, Warhammer stores (if you are lucky), smaller game shops usually those with other types of card and board games, and custom goodies from places like Etsy or dice stores.

For the Novice:
A starter set can be a great idea but keep in mind a starter set either comes with lots of pieces and no paints or some pieces and some paints. These examples are below:
However, I would opt for you to go a different route instead of either of these starter set options. If you know of a particular group that the interested party would like then focus on that, otherwise get 1 - 3 of the individual mini figures such as these:
Then purchase a started set of brushes but be sure it includes brushes to dry brush with as well as some to "fine" paint with. Like this set (this is one purchased and used by my mini-painting husband however he also has the Squidmar set and individual expensive brushes that range up to $20+ a piece):
Of course, you will need paints. Of all paints, Citadel paints are widely used but you can't go wrong with Two Thin Coats, these are slightly cheaper and have matching colors to their Citadel counterparts. There are also Vallejo and Army Painter paints, but these seem to be the least favored of those who I know that paint their own minis.
Then finally you will need at the bare minimum a cutting tool such as an exacto knife and sprue glue. My husband uses Taniya Extra Thin Cement. He actually has two, one in which he placed bits of sprue in the mixture to thicken it since it melts the plastic.
For the Apprentice:
At this point, the apprentice in your life already has a base selection and a completed small unit such as a Kill Team or Boarding Patrol, perhaps a full army or mini-figure team set or two. This would be a great time to maybe get a fancier brush set (like the one we mentioned earlier) or a larger box set for a new army or continuation of a 40K army not yet completed. My husbands current sets includes Kill Team Octarius, Kill Team Hive Storm, Leviathan, Deathwing Assault, and Nemesis Claw. For Christmas he is getting The Inner Circle and now he is beyond excited for the arrival of The Death Korps of Krieg.
If they already have plenty of units then upgrading their gear might be the best essential! Think of things like Milliput (over Green Stuff) and shaping tools, custom bases, magnifying glasses, mini drill tool, etc. (I will have a larger list below with links).
It is probably time to get their first carry case if they don't already have one. These protect the mini figures from damage as one travels to play or do tournament or even just to show off their painted models.
For the Pro:
The pro needs more! At this point there might be a pile of unpainted gray sprues in the hobby space or maybe they are diligent and it is all completed. But the pro needs a proper display for their completed figures.
Depending on the size and space you have available will shape what kind of area these models can be displayed. The good news is that there is a vast range of sizes available. Little ones are perfect for shelves and desk, while whole cabinets are great for those who have vast 1000-point armies obliterating the battlefield. We currently have a "bar" spot in our apartment that had glass shelves which we turned into the Warhammer display area! However, one day we will get a large display cabinet for the armies as it will help prevent them from getting dusty, which is the issue we have now.
On top of this, the pro in your life probably needs new or different terrain. The options are limitless and using a good YT vid you can even find ways to DIY your own from repurposing those on sale holiday items into worn torn villages or blown out bits of debris. Two of our gaming set came with terrain (Octarius and Hivestorm) but if we were to get something next it would be this or something similar that is different from what we already have!
Unlimited Stocking Stuffer and Gift List for All Warhammer 40K Present Ideas
Not all Warhammer lovers enjoy the mini-figures and modeling. I personally don't enjoy it (I tried) but I do love the lore and all the cool gadgets. Although, I seem to specifically focus on 40K, there are many varieties of Warhammer out there including Age of Sigmar, 30K, Old World, and so on.
Here is an endless list with links to a variety of Warhammer gifts and stocking stuffers (some are affiliated and others are not but the goal is to navigate you to any and all items that are Warhammer).
Audible Books - Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts, Ravenor, Pariah (These are all my favorites and are all series except Gaunt's Ghost, which makes me sad every time)
Physical Books - Briardark, The Horus Hersey, Lords of Nocturne
Purity Seals
Faction Magnets - (got the Dark Angels one for my husbands tool box)
Velcro Patches - Dark Angels, Ultra Marines, Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Grey Knights, The Emperor Protects (got this patch for his stocking <3 ) and more
Dice - (lots of options but our preferred is Baron of Dice) but only when we can't get a proper dice set for a team / we also have the debate over the 8th gen and 10th gen dice and which is better
Collectible Heraldries of the Chapters Pins (Dark Angels, Ultra Marines, Space Wolves, Inquisitor, Death Watch, Blood Angels, Imperial Fists)
Jewelry such as necklaces and sigils
Key chains of lasguns and bolters
Other pins such as Aquila's (most of these are all produced by STARFORGED
Adeptus Mechanicus lovers of the machine god can enjoy a good thurible / censer review have stated that it is a cool item but it did melt kinda shut when actually put to use which is why I opted not to purchase one.
Coins
Sweaters - these are Warhammer approved by the store Merchoid - although some of these look cool, we have never actually purchased one so I cannot comment on their quality.
Plushies / Stuffed Toys the official TOMY brand backed by the Warhammer 40k store (don't be fooled by these cute things as the dark warp of space has unimaginable terrors that would truly lead a mortal into sheer madness)
Tools:
Shaping tools and chisels
Drill bits and the handle by Army Painter (The husband initially got the drill bits and used a different handle which was fine but it does seem to maybe "fit better" with the actually army painter handle or we will see as I got the handle for his stocking too!)
Milliput, Army Painter Green Stuff, Citadel Liquid Green Stuff
Airbrush - my husband does not use an airbrush so I do not know what all would be needed for this set, however there are ample youtube videos to search that can guide you along this path
Various types of painting brushes - they will be able to use all kinds and will need ones that are delicate and others that can take a beating
Pre made bases - like the ones found on Etsy, Gamers Guild AZ and Bitzstore (I used Gamers Guild AZ and purchased 2 sets of 8 pre-decorated bases just as a fun alternative for my husbands hobby, these are currently under the tree but I will update on quality once they are approved by the artisan)
Magnifying Glasses or clamp desk light with magnifier
Paint holder - I purchased the spinning citadel paint holder for my husband and it gets tons of action but there are so many different kinds and for all the paint types, as something like Two Thin Coats would not sit nicely in this due to bottle shape and size
Laser pointers and tape measures for accurate measurement taking - the laser pointers make for great intense gaming sessions to have very clear and measured answers
Gaming backpacks to carry your supplies
Hopefully this guide on how to buy Warhammer gifts helped you find the perfect item for the Warhammer enthusiast in your life.
